CUUSP to host bilingual teach-in in Mt. Pleasant

On Wednesday, October 14th, 2009, CUUSP (Coalition of the Uninsured & Underinsured for Single-Payer) is hosting a bilingual teach-in regarding health care reform. Thursday’s teach-in takes place from 7pm until 9pm at La Casa Community Center, located at 3166 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW, Washington, DC 20010.

Over the past several months, there has been much debate about the future of health care and insurance in America. President Obama has attempted to create a bipartisan balance between those on the ‘right’ who see health care reform as an intrusion on private enterprise, and those on the ‘left’ who seek a government sponsored ‘public option.’ Often absent from the discussion, and media spotlight, have been proponents of proposed ‘single-payer’ legislation, H.R. 676, sponsored by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) and at least 87 members of Congress, that would cover all Americans and drive down costs by reigning in exorbitant administrative and marketing expenses accrued by private insurance companies.

Recent polls show that over 60% of Americans favor a ‘single-payer’, government sponsored and privately delivered health care system; and yet, the voices of the uninsured, and advocates for “Expanded and Improved Medicare For All“ legislation, have been sidelined in the health care debate. One-third (1/3) of all Americans are either uninsured or under-insured; and, of the uninsured, over two-thirds (2/3) are from communities of color. Under the current system, racial and financial disparities have run amuck; and, medical costs have risen unchecked, ruining the lives of many Americans, due to the denial of care and financial hardship.

The public is invited to the event to learn why ‘single-payer’ is a viable option for all Americans. Community and patient advocate Sonia Umanzor, as well as a representative from Physicians for a National Health Program, will be the guest presenters. There will also be an opportunity to share personal stories about difficulty accessing health care under our current system. The event will be fully bilingual in English and Spanish. Snacks will be provided from a local restaurant.
